Kit List

A Kit List Is One of the Most Requested Things – so Here It Is.

This is most of the gear available to students on the training courses and comes recommended. Each item has an honest description next to it in order to help you out.

The Amazon links here are for your convenience but are not affiliate links. I would urge you to shop around.

Microphones: Boya M1 Lapel Mic
The Boya M1 is a great first microphone. This lapel microphone is inexpensive but with audio quality you’d expect to pay much more for.
Microphones: Rode Smartlav+ Lapel Mic
This is great if you want a lapel mic with a little more finesse than the Boya M1 and with a better sound. Note this has a short cable so worth buying with the SC1 extension cable.
Microphones: Rode SC1 extension cable
It’s worth getting this extension cable if you go with the Rode Smartlav+ as that mic cable is a little short.
Microphones: Rode SC6 splitter
This is really useful for adding in two lapel mics – but also plugging in headphones. (you need a headphone jack of course to connect this to a smartphone)
Microphones: Rode SC6L splitter for lightening port
Rode SC6L Splitter is a new version of the popular SC6 – but this is only for iOS as it has a lightening connector.
Microphones: Rode VideoMicro Mini Shotgun Mic
Rode Video Micro (this goes on the coldshoe mount on the Sevenoak smartphone Grip see in the ‘Rigs’ section). Don’t forget you need an extra cable – the SC7. This link includes both.) Great if you have iPhone and android.
Microphones: Rode Video Mic Me L Mini Shotgun Mic
Rode Video Mic Me L mini shotgun microphone – This goes straight into the lightening port of in iPhone. (make sure any phone case you have doesn’t prevent this attaching. I have taken a razor blade to my case to make it fit)
Microphones: Rode Video Mic Me Mini Shotgun Mic
Rode Video Mic Me – mini shotgun microphone – (connects directly to headphone jack – so you must have one!)  Turn on airplane mode for this to avoid interference.
Microphones: Boya MM1 mini shotgun mic
Boya MM1 – Mini – shotgun microphone. (connects to headphone jack) This is a decent microphone for natural sound and interviews where the interviewee isn’t too far away. Similar to the Rode Video Micro but slightly less well built – but it costs less.
Microphones: iRig Mic HD2 Handheld Mic
iRig Mic HD 2 Handheld mic with lightening connector for iOS only. This has variable gain and an LED to warn if your levels are too high or low.
